DESCRIPTION:WE’RE DELIGHTED to welcome back Liverpool-born saxophonist Tim Whitehead\, one of Britain’s most thoughtful composers and improvisers. Tim plays soprano\, alto and tenor saxophone\, plus flute\, with what The Times describes as “a sense of grace and economy.” \nHis remarkable career began with a law degree from Manchester University before jazz pulled him back to music in the mid-1970s. He won the Young Jazz Musicians Award with his band South of the Border in 1977. During the 1980s he became a key member of the groundbreaking big band Loose Tubes. \nTim has released numerous acclaimed albums. His 1999 recording Personal Standards won Jazz Album of the Year in BBC Music Magazine. His extraordinary Colour Beginnings project emerged from his 2009 residency at Tate Britain\, where he created music inspired by JMW Turner’s watercolour sketches. The album earned shortlisting for the British Composer Awards. \nHe’s collaborated with pianist Giovanni Mirabassi\, composer Colin Riley and the HomeMade Orchestra\, and has toured extensively across the UK\, Europe and the USA. The London Jazz Festival commissioned him to compose Turner and The Thames for their 2013 and 2014 festivals. \nTim continues to perform regularly and brings his distinctive voice and compositional imagination to every performance. DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome back vibraphone virtuoso Anthony Kerr\, widely regarded as one of the most exciting vibes players in British jazz today. \nBorn in Belfast\, Anthony studied at the Belfast School of Music before moving to New York in the mid-1980s to study with David Friedman and Kenny Werner. He won a scholarship to the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in 1987\, launching a stellar international career. \nAnthony’s impressive list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of jazz. He’s performed and recorded with George Shearing\, Georgie Fame\, Charlie Watts\, Elvis Costello\, Claire Martin\, Peter King\, Norma Winstone\, Mike Westbrook\, Louis Stewart\, and many others. He’s been a long-serving soloist with the BBC Big Band since 1998 and continues to work with Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames. \nHis accolades began early. He won Best Instrumentalist at the 1994 British Jazz Awards\, followed by Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 1995. He received Rising Star nominations in 1995\, 1996 and 1998. His debut album First Cry\, created with singer Jacqui Dankworth\, reached number three in the Virgin Jazz Charts and received rave reviews. His second album Now Hear This was recorded live at Ronnie Scott’s in 1997. \nAnthony has served as Professor of Jazz Vibraphone at the Royal College of Music for more than 20 years. He also teaches at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. DESCRIPTION:WE’RE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME BACK AWARD-WINNING clarinettist Julian Marc Stringle\, hailed by Sir John Dankworth as “the best clarinet player to emerge in British jazz for several decades.” \nJulian started as a child prodigy reed player. He studied at the Latymer Music School and London College of Music\, learning clarinet with Wilf Keeley and composition with William Lloyd Webber. He made his TV debut with Acker Bilk at just 14\, leading his teenage Dixieland band “Young Jazz.” At 17\, he formed a modern jazz quintet and toured Europe. \nHis impressive career includes performances with Peanuts Hucko\, Wild Bill Davison\, George Chisholm\, Kenny Ball\, Don Lusher\, Kenny Baker\, Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth. He’s recorded with Digby Fairweather\, Paul Jones\, Danny Moss\, Roy Williams\, Jim Mullen\, Tommy Whittle\, John Parricelli and many others. He’s appeared at Wembley Arena with Meatloaf and in Monaco with Tina Turner. \nJulian has won Best Clarinettist at the British Jazz Awards twice (2006/7 and 2019). He’s written over 30 TV jingles and documentary film scores\, arranged and conducted a big band album for Charles Aznavour in Paris\, and recorded extensively under his own name. \nHe plays with The Dream Band\, featuring keyboard virtuoso Neil Angilley\, Canadian guitar star Dominic Ashworth\, stylish vocalist Jacqui Hicks and dynamic drummer Mike Bradley. The band blends melodic Latin-influenced jazz funk with swing standards and original compositions. Recent performances have earned rave reviews for their chemistry and musical excellence. \nWith his contemporary approach\, Julian has pioneered placing the clarinet in modern musical settings. His influences include Benny Goodman\, Artie Shaw\, Buddy DeFranco and Eddie Daniels. DESCRIPTION:WE’RE PLEASED TO WELCOME BACK rising trumpet and flugelhorn talent Marco Natale-Miles\, a versatile player making his mark on the jazz scene. \nMarco is an alumnus of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO)\, which he joined at age 13 and remained involved with throughout his development. He studied at prestigious institutions including the Purcell School\, the Royal Academy of Music Junior Jazz department\, and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. \nAfter graduation\, Marco spent time touring on cruise ships\, honing his already considerable talent and gaining valuable professional experience. He’s equally at home in jazz and classical settings\, performing with big bands\, jazz combos\, function groups and orchestral ensembles. \nMarco has appeared at Googlies before with our 7-Aside septet\, on big band Sundays and as a soloist. In 2018\, he led workshops at the 100 Club exploring groove-based improvisation and performed with his own quintet\, showcasing exciting new material alongside explorative improvisations on standards. \nHis playing bridges the old and new\, always striving for creative innovation within jazz.
