SUMMARY:THURSDAY FEBRUARY 5 2026 - LIANE CARROLL VOCALS AND PIANO
DESCRIPTION:We’re absolutely delighted to welcome back Liane Carroll – a dear friend of Googlies and a firm favourite with our audiences over many years.\nLiane brings the rare gift of doing two things brilliantly: she sings with soul and plays piano with serious chops. The awards tell part of the story – two BBC Jazz Awards and Best Female Jazz Vocalist at the inaugural Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards – but you need to hear her live to understand why she’s earned them.\nOver sixteen albums\, she’s developed a sound that’s unmistakably hers. She’s shared stages with the cream of British and international jazz talent – Ian Shaw\, John Etheridge\, and Claire Martin among them.\nThe Guardian called her “a world-class act”\, but we think she’s simply one of the most compelling performers you’ll catch at any jazz club in the country.\nDon’t miss this one.

SUMMARY:THURSDAY JANUARY 29  2026 - GEOFF MASON ON TROMBONE
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to have Geoff Mason back at Googlies tonight – he’s become one of our regulars.\nThis North London trombonist has carved out quite a reputation on the jazz circuit. You’ll find him blowing with some of the scene’s heavyweight big bands – Ronnie Scott’s\, the 606 Club\, and The Squadronaires among them.\nWhen he’s not touring festivals or laying down tracks for film and telly (he’s contributed to “Grow Your Own” and BBC’s “The Debt”)\, Geoff fronts his own quintet with saxophonist Mike Coats. They’ve cut three records\, earned airtime on BBC Radio 2 and Jazz FM\, and played the major UK jazz festivals.\nThe calibre of musicians Geoff works with tells you everything – American visitors like Scott Hamilton and Greg Abate\, British heavyweights Derek Nash and Digby Fairweather\, and he even hit the road with Martha and the Vandellas.\nExpect top-drawer trombone tonight.

SUMMARY:John Etheridge on Guitar Thursday December 18 2025 at Googlies
DESCRIPTION:A TRUE LEGEND OF BRITISH JAZZ GUITAR\, John Etheridge brings his remarkable breadth and virtuosity back to our stage. \nPat Metheny calls him “one of the best guitarists in the world.” Eric Clapton told him early on\, “You’re not a blues player\, but you’re a great guitarist.” Jimi Hendrix simply said\, “You’re great.” Such praise comes to few musicians\, but John has earned it through decades of fearless eclecticism and brilliant playing. \nJohn refuses to recognise musical boundaries. His career perfectly illustrates this: he spent years touring and recording with the legendary Stéphane Grappelli (1976-1981) while simultaneously working with pioneering jazz-fusion band Soft Machine (1975-1978\, 1984\, and 2004 to present). This April 2025 marks 50 years since he joined Soft Machine\, replacing Allan Holdsworth. \nHis collaborators span the spectrum from classical to rock: John Williams\, Yehudi Menuhin\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Nigel Kennedy\, Andy Summers\, Biréli Lagrène\, Danny Thompson\, and even Hawkwind. He’s equally commanding on acoustic and electric guitar\, moving effortlessly between jazz\, fusion\, classical\, flamenco\, and progressive rock. \nJohn began playing at 13\, inspired by Hank Marvin and Django Reinhardt. Though his father was a jazz pianist\, John taught himself. He came up through the 1960s British blues boom\, jamming with Eric Clapton at London’s Speakeasy Club. His early bands included Darryl Way’s Wolf and Global Village Trucking Company before joining Soft Machine. \nHe’s been nominated three times for Musician of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards (2005\, 2006\, 2011). His recent work includes touring with Gordon Giltrap on their acclaimed “2 Parts Guitar” shows and continuing performances with Soft Machine across Europe and America. \nJohn remains as active and innovative as ever\, still travelling\, still practising\, still pushing musical boundaries. An unmissable evening with a true master awaits. \nAn optional 2-course supper at £15.00 is available but must be booked\, vegetarians & others with dietary requirements will be accommodated if requested when reserving. \nReservations are required for all events. \nEntry: members £10.00 non-members £12.00 unless marked* \n(Entry marked * will be members £12 non-members £15) \nThere is a 50% concession for students for all events. \n We do not have the facility to accept payment for entry or meals by credit or debit cards although we do at the bar. \nFor information about ULEZ please see ‘About our Venue’ page.

SUMMARY:Pete Long Multi instrumentalist playing Thursday December 11 2025 at Googlies
DESCRIPTION:ALWAYS A HIGHLIGHT HERE AT GOOGLIES\, saxophonist and clarinettist Pete Long brings his extensive talents back to our stage. \nPete has built one of the most diverse careers in British jazz. His versatility across the woodwind family has made him a first-call musician for everything from West End theatre pits to international jazz festivals. He’s equally at home on alto\, tenor\, baritone saxophone and clarinet\, with flute and even oboe in his arsenal. \nHis collaborators read like a who’s who of music: Dizzy Gillespie\, John Scofield\, Chick Corea\, Tom Jones\, Norah Jones\, Georgie Fame and Lionel Richie. He spent five years with Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and arranged for Paul McCartney\, John Cale and Texas. You’ve heard his baritone sax and oboe work whether you know it or not—his playing on Stereophonics’ “Handbags and Gladrags” made it the UK’s best-selling single of 2002. \nPete has become one of Britain’s leading big band directors. His award-winning Echoes of Ellington recreates Duke’s sound using original manuscripts from the Smithsonian. His innovative “Jazz Planets” album—reimagining Holst in Ellington’s style—won The Times’ “Must Have Jazz CD of the Year” in 2018. He regularly directs the Big Band at Ronnie Scott’s and has commissioned work ranging from a jazz Swan Lake to orchestrations for The Moody Blues. \nAs an educator\, Pete works with young musicians across Britain\, from West Wales to the Royal Academy\, Guildhall and Royal College. His masterclasses and workshops have influenced a new generation of players. \nTonight you’ll hear the full range of Pete’s artistry—his technical command\, his deep knowledge of jazz tradition\, and his ability to make audiences laugh between numbers.
