Simon Spillett – Saxophones
11th July 2024 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Simon Spillett is widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest saxophonists. The influence of the great Tubby Hayes is clearly detectable in Simon’s style and is much appreciated by anyone who recalls those heady days of British jazz. Simon creates jazz with immense energy and drive and has won several awards – BBC Jazz Award, Jazz Album of the Year, Best British Tenor Saxophonist, and an award for Services to British Jazz. Simon’s appearance at Googlies is not to be missed,
Simon wrote the biography of Tubby Hayes which is considered by many to be the finest of a British jazz artist and in addition to his writing and travelling the country for gigs he leads a brilliant big band which celebrates the music of Tubby Hayes. Recently, the Simon Spillett Big Band recorded previously unrecorded Tubby charts and in Simon’s words ‘the session went beautifully’. The CD ‘Dear Tubby H’ was reviewed in Jazzwise by Peter Vacher and he was so impressed that he awarded the ultimate accolade – five stars! Let’s hope there are still some copies available.
