Tim Whitehead Saxophones November 6 2025 at Googlies

6th November 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 11:30 pm
£10.00

WE’RE DELIGHTED to welcome back Liverpool-born saxophonist Tim Whitehead, one of Britain’s most thoughtful composers and improvisers. Tim plays soprano, alto and tenor saxophone, plus flute, with what The Times describes as “a sense of grace and economy.”

His remarkable career began with a law degree from Manchester University before jazz pulled him back to music in the mid-1970s. He won the Young Jazz Musicians Award with his band South of the Border in 1977. During the 1980s he became a key member of the groundbreaking big band Loose Tubes.

Tim has released numerous acclaimed albums. His 1999 recording Personal Standards won Jazz Album of the Year in BBC Music Magazine. His extraordinary Colour Beginnings project emerged from his 2009 residency at Tate Britain, where he created music inspired by JMW Turner’s watercolour sketches. The album earned shortlisting for the British Composer Awards.

He’s collaborated with pianist Giovanni Mirabassi, composer Colin Riley and the HomeMade Orchestra, and has toured extensively across the UK, Europe and the USA. The London Jazz Festival commissioned him to compose Turner and The Thames for their 2013 and 2014 festivals.

Tim continues to perform regularly and brings his distinctive voice and compositional imagination to every performance. Always a favourite at Googlies, we look forward to another memorable evening with this masterful musician.
